Reilly Johannsen - Miss Teen East Texas 2010

Reilly's Mission:
To empower children and teens to become educated consumers and to
make shifts in behavior that can be measured by changes in rates of
obesity and physical fitness as well as mental well-being and self-esteem.

Background:
Over the past three decades, the childhood obesity rate has more than doubled for pre-school children aged 2-5 years and adolescents aged 12-19 years, and it has more than tripled for children aged 6-11 years of age.  Approximately nine million children over six years of age are considered obese.  Young people are at risk of developing serious medical problems in a society that looks down on this condition.

Goal: To reach out to school age children and teens and to help them to understand the close relationship between physical and mental health and the importance of maintaining a balance in both of these areas.  Through my school programs,my fan page on Facebook, my dance activities and my  exercise video, I am educating children and teens about the importance of making "healthy choices" a life long habit.

School Programs:

I provide informational presentations to school children and teens on "healthy choices" to make when eating "fast food" and the importance of making exercise fun through group activities, organized sports or fitness clubs.  I emphasize the importance of burning as many calories a day as one can by making simple lifestyle choices, like taking the stairs instead of the elevator and helping around the house with cooking and cleaning.  Any activity that gets us up and moving contributes in a positive way to fitness.  These "healthy choices", along with proper diet, promote self-esteem and foster healthy relationships.
